Prepare first
- Record the server, game and extension versions.
- Keep an external backup of the world, configuration and mod list.
- Check the extension author's requirements and dependencies.
- Schedule downtime and inform players.
Change one thing at a time
Stop the server as required by the game. Use the provided installer when the extension is listed, or the author's server package when manual installation is supported. Do not assume that client files belong on a server.
A Steam update may stop the service and replace game files. Wait for completion, read the logs and check client/server version compatibility. Avoid combining an update, a version change and multiple new mods in one operation.
If startup fails
Read the first relevant log error, check dependencies and restore the consistent backup set when necessary. For Minecraft, match the modpack, version and loader. See our modded Minecraft hosting guide.
