Exploration makes the server generate terrain, structures and lighting. Chunky prepares a chosen area in advance to reduce generation work while players explore. It does not fix every cause of lag.

Prepare and install

  1. Keep an external backup of the world and configuration.
  2. Check free disk space, including room for other dimensions and backups.
  3. Download the Chunky server build matching your Minecraft version and platform. Bukkit/Paper uses plugins; compatible Fabric, Forge and NeoForge distributions use mods.
  4. Restart, verify that Chunky loaded, and choose a quiet period without players.

Select the area

Use the following in-game commands with the required permissions. In a compatible console, omit the first slash. Replace world with the actual world name recognised by your server. Dimension names vary by platform.

/chunky world world
/chunky shape square
/chunky center 0 0
/chunky radius 2500
/chunky start

Coordinates 0 0 are not necessarily your spawn. Select the appropriate centre.

Choose a manageable radius

Radius in blocksSquare dimensionsRelative area
2,5005,000 × 5,0001
5,00010,000 × 10,0004
10,00020,000 × 20,00016

These dimensions explicitly use shape square, subject to chunk boundaries. Doubling the radius quadruples the area. Disk usage and duration vary with versions, mods and world data. Start small and measure instead of relying on a universal disk-size estimate or player-count rule.

Pause, resume or cancel

/chunky pause
/chunky continue
/chunky cancel

Pause retains resumable progress; continue resumes it. Cancel removes the task and its saved progress, but leaves already generated chunks in the world. Monitor progress and free space. Prepare the Nether or End separately if needed, using their actual names and limits.

Avoid common mistakes

  • Generating too much terrain without reserving backup space.
  • Running the task at busy times when CPU load affects players.
  • Changing world-generation mods without checking compatibility with existing terrain.

Still experiencing lag?

Investigate entities, machines, plugins, simulation distance and logs. A pre-generated world still needs suitable resources. Choose modded Minecraft hosting based on the pack's requirements. The current RAM plan supports up to 8 GB; contact us before ordering if you need more.
